Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA) are powerful philanthropic tools. With the growth in the stock market over the last 18 months, along with the waiver of the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) in 2020, and the raising of the starting age for withdrawals to age 72, there is great potential for schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, healthcare organizations and other non-profits in IRA giving. Many IRAs have more money in them than owners will ever need for income. This gives them the opportunity to be more philanthropic than they may have ever dreamed.
IRAs can be simple ways for donors to support your organization both now and in the future. Outright gifts through Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) or beneficiary designations do not require rewriting estate plans. Additionally, inherited IRAs are increasing rapidly. Congress recently required heirs to complete the withdrawal of inherited IRA funds in 10 years. This can offer significant philanthropic opportunity for your institution or organization.
In this Gonser Gerber Institute “Quick Bite” program, we will explore the value of your donors Individual Retirement Accounts as a giving opportunity. We will review what an IRA is, what it can mean for your institution, and how to talk about it with prospects and donors.
