Congratulations on your new role as Vice President for Advancement! In this role, you’ll be responsible for working with your president, board of trustees, foundation boards, overseeing a staff of development directors and constituent engagement officers, managing a major gift portfolio, increasing fundraising results while managing your departmental budget, overseeing the marketing functions for your institution, working with others across your institution, launching a campaign, comparing database systems and develop policy, and the list goes on and on.

This Gonser Gerber Workshop for New Vice Presidents is designed to support new leaders during their first few years on the job. Led by experienced practitioners and consultants, our workshop will help you focus your time and effort for maximum success, and help set you up with a road map for onboarding at your new position. Designed for new Vice Presidents in the advancement and development profession with three or fewer years of experience in this role, you will also learn from your peers and develop a network with other new Vice Presidents.
Topics we will cover include:
- Discuss working with and supporting your president, board of trustees and other senior leaders, including athletic leadership, academic leadership and Deans, other vice presidents, and the CFO.
- Learn best practices for budget management, implementation and making the case for expanded resources.
- Access the skills of your team and institution, and plan for the success of your advancement team.
- Build the skills needed to succeed in these critical early years through hands-on, collaborative sessions.
- Share experiences, stories from the trenches and expand your professional network.
- Prepare for common challenges and obstacles.
Who Should Attend:
This workshop is designed for vice presidents in advancement/development who have less than three years of experience in their role or who are new to their institution. Attendance is limited so that we can build a cohort atmosphere with lots of dialogue and personalized learning. Please come prepared to talk, share, ask questions, and listen.
Registration and Hotel Information:
This Gonser Gerber Institute workshop cost $995 per registration, $895 for each additional registration from the same institution. Current clients of Gonser Gerber receive a discounted fee of $795 per registrant. We will be hosting this program in the offices of Gonser Gerber in Naperville, Illinois. Our fee includes a binder of materials, lunch on Thursday, with snacks and beverages both days. Attendance is limited.

Presented by:
Gregory L. King, senior consultant with Gonser Gerber, and current Vice President for University Advancement at the University of Mount Union in Ohio. Greg has worked at the University of Mount Union for more than 30 years in positions of increasing responsibility in areas ranging from student affairs and recruitment to diversity and advancement. Since 2008, he has served as Vice President for University Advancement and member of the University’s Leadership Team.
Douglas D. Mason, partner at Gonser Gerber, has over 30 years of experience in institutional advancement including counsel to a broad range of organizations nationally. He has advised his clients on numerous capital campaigns and comprehensive strategies that have ranged from $10 million to $200 million. Doug has spoken at national conferences and a variety of local and regional meetings of other professional associations. He also served as Vice President for Advancement at Wartburg College in Iowa.
